Our washing machines are a part of daily life we often take for granted. We put dirty clothes in and get clean clothes out, and we don’t think too much about it. That’s understandable, as they’re not the most glamorous thing in our houses, but it’s important to remember to make sure you clean your washing machine on a regular basis. Washing machines don’t go wrong often, but when they do, things can get expensive, so it’s best to take care of them!
Why Should I Clean My Washing Machine?
Keeping your washing machine clean will help keep your clothes clean, too! Over time, the dirt and soap scum that’s left behind after you’ve finished washing your clothes will start to build up in your washing machine’s pipes, which can encourage mould to grow. You’ll also start to get a gradual build-up of limescale (a hard, white substance made up of minerals that are left behind by running water) in the pipes which makes things worse. As the soapy water rushes through pipes that are covered in soap scum, dirt, and limescale, it picks up debris and bad smells that can be washed onto your clothes. If you’ve ever taken out a load of washing only to be met with a musty smell, this is why! If that problem isn’t treated, eventually all the soap scum, mould and limescale will build up to the point that your washing machine pipes become blocked. That’s when things get expensive! Blocked pipes can lead to your washing machine being severely damaged, or water leaks that’ll damage your kitchen. If your washing machine goes kaput like this, it can really ruin your week, so it’s best to make sure it never gets to this point! Make sure you clean the outside of your washing machine too. This will not only help your whole kitchen look nice, but it’ll also make sure you don’t encourage bacteria or corrosion to form on your washing machine.
How Do I Clean the Outside of My Washing Machine?
It’s important that you clean up any spills as soon as they happen. If you leave spills of detergent or anything else to sit on your washing machine, they’ll prove much harder to clean up later on. The worst-case scenario is that they’ll attract mould and corrode the finish of your washing machine, or maybe even leak down the back or inside to damage sensitive parts! Avoid this problem by cleaning up spills with warm, soapy water as soon as you notice them.
Should I Keep the Door Open?
One easy way to keep your washing machine in peak condition is to leave the door open. It might be annoying if you’re a neat freak but this will help ensure that all the water left inside the drum after a wash can evaporate properly. Leaving drops of water inside your washing machine drum can lead to mould growth and can corrode your drum and the sealant on the washing machine door. Leaving your washing machine door open after you’ve finished a load of washing will prolong the life of your washing machine quite a bit.
